There are MANY organizations fighting against food waste in Denmark. In this post, I will focus in Copenhagen, cause that's where I'm living and having the experience.

I wanted to write about this topic because, I don't know you, but I am this type of person who literally feels the pain when I have to throw food out. It almost never happens, cause I tend to be a very mindful shopper and I think I'm good with the logistics of my meal preps.

HOWEVER, the story is a bit different in the global food industry. There are tons and tons of GOOD food going to the trash every day. It's extremely sad, and in most of the countries people are not even allowed to take this food and eat, the so-called surplus is not allowed by the regulations to be consumed, so it just becomes trash.

In Denmark, tons of food is lost as well, but there are initiatives doing big changes.

Let's start with the first one I heard about last year:

Too Good To Go fights food waste using an app that connects users to stores that have unsold, surplus food.

Created in Denmark, now available almost everywhere in Europe.

Each of the connected shops creates their own magic boxes containing items that are still good to be eaten but probably wouldn't be consumed by their clients in time.

These boxes are sold in the app at an affordable price.

nnnn

You just need to open the application, find an offer in your favorite place, order it and pick it up in a specific hour (that's really cool actually, you can eat a range of different foods and schedule it every day in your calendar!)

You can find breakfast/lunch/dinner boxes and also specific food ingredients from a range of different shops (I've seen brunch boxes, sushi, bakery, beers, and a lot more)

The fact you never know what will come inside your magic box brings extra fun to the action. You save money and you save the planet as well.

nnnn2) Foodsharing Copenhagennnnn

I have a lot to say about this organization, but it would require a whole post, so I'm gonna try to be brief here.

It's been nearly 6 months since I'm volunteering at Foodsharing CPH and I totally love it. Every time I attend the events I feel like my energies are renewed. It's such a good atmosphere between the people working there and making it REAL, we literally fight against the waste every week.

nnnnBut let me explain what Foodsharing is, quickly. nnnn

We collect surplus from our partners (mostly vegetables/fruits and bread from supermarkets and bakeries) using a van, then we bring this food to a place where a group of volunteers will sort the items out and make them available for the audience (around 400 people weekly) to pick them up for free. There is a whole logistics behind it to make all happen, and it's amazing, I'm really proud of all this and happy to be able to contribute somehow.

The third organization that got my attention is Wefood, I found it by mistake while walking through Nørrebrogade (a big shopping street in Copenhagen) last year.

Wefood is a supermarket selling surplus items for a minimum price. All ran by volunteers. Food warriors. The profits are all destined for poverty projects in Africa and Asia.

It's really inspiring to see organizations like this happening in Europe, especially in developed countries like the nordic ones. They have the regulations and conditions to invest in such organizations. Hopefully, we'll see something like this happening everywhere in the future.
