To be honest, I have never heard of Bagnoregio until a couple of months ago. That was when I moved to the region of Lazio, and I met people who introduced me to this magic place.

nnnnIt's true what they say about Bagnoregio, it's a hidden pearl in the center of Italy. nnnn

I'd almost call it a ghost city if it wasn't the presence of tourists. Proper inhabitants living there? Only 7 (according to Wikipedia).

Let's start with the most interesting question:

nnnnWhy the city is dying?

Briefly talking, the Etruscans were responsible for settling Bagnoregio more than 2500 years ago - yes, before Jesus.

nnnn

However, the city was totally abandoned in the 16th century due to erosion caused by time, weather, and also earthquakes! I can imagine that at that time people had no idea what to do and it was easier to move. The erosion is happening mainly because of the base of the city - which consists of unstable volcanic materials. Moreover, the seismic activity in the area helps the city to fall down day by day.

What you actually see on the picture is a little survival piece of the town, which was much bigger in the past.

That's why the city is dying, and in the future, it won't be there actually, so run!

nnnnBagnoregio is another great example of how history persists in every corner of Italy. nnnn

After exploring the countryside of Lazio, I am totally convinced that Italians live in an open-air museum! If you start digging in your garden, you'll find yourself in a live archaeological site, easily.

After being abandoned in the 16th century, the little town was forgotten. The efforts from the government to bring tourists' attention to the town are quite recent.

I got shocked this morning when I found out that Bagnoregio inspired Director Hayao Miyazaki to create part of the scenario of Spirited Away film. That's one of the best animations I've ever watched.

That makes sense when you check the numbers of Japanese tourists visiting the town every year. The movie in Italian is called "La città incantata", in Portuguese: A Viagem de Chihiro.

Recently, Airbnb chose Bagnoregio to host a project that brings artists from all over the world to this little inspiring town.

Finally, the regional Governor Zingaretti nominated it for being Unesco World Heritage site.
